Mavic Air 2 GPS

The Mavic Air 2 use both GPS and GLONASS, allowing the quadcopter to pick up many satellites. The dual satellite system is used by the Mavic Air 2 to assist with precision flying, very precise hovering, return to home and much more.

Is The Mavic Air 2 Waterproof?

The Mavic Air 2 is not waterproof. There are waterproof drones on the market but the DJI Mavic Air 2 is not waterproof.

Is The DJI Air 2 Easy To Fly?

Is It Easy To Update The Mavic Air 2 Firmware?

The Mavic Air 2 firmware update is very easy. Like all the best drones, these firmware updates add new features or fix small bugs with the Mavic Air 2.

The update process is very simple. You can update the Mavic Air 2 firmware using the DJI Fly app in the Remote Controller or using the DJI Assistant 2 application, which is installed on a laptop.

Mavic Air 2 IMU And Compass

Details of the Mavic Air 2 IMU and Compass can be viewed in the DJI Fly app. Click on the 3 dots for System Settings and then Safety.  Scroll down to Sensors. It will show if the IMU and Compass are showing normal or requires calibration.

You can also calibrate the Mavic Air 2 IMU and Compass using the DJI Assistant 2 app.

If there is an IMU error while the Mavic Air 2 is flying, you will see a blinking red light on the actual quadcopter.

Mavic Air 2 Max Video Transmission Range

The Mavic Air 2 max video transmission distance is 6.2 mile (10 km), unobstructed and in line of sight using the Remote Controller with the DJI Fly app connected. The Mavic Air 2 video transmission uses the DJI OcuSysnc 2.0 technology.

Note: Most countries only allow drones to be flown within line of sight unless you are registered and permitted to fly beyond line of sight.

Every country has different drone regulations and it is very important to know what the exact drone regulations for your country is. It is a very great idea to become familiar with your own countries UAS flight laws, which should include the areas where you are not allowed to fly.

OcuSync 2.0 is the technology, which allows the Mavic Air 2 ground station remote controller to communicate with the Mavic Air 2 quadcopter for live video streaming.

The new Mavic Air with OcuSync 2.0, allows for video transmission up to 6.2 mile (10 km) as well as delivering up to 1080p FHD resolution live stream straight from the Mavic Air 2 drone. The 1080p live stream can be directly edited in the Fly app and shared on social media.

With Mavic Air OcuSync 2.0, there is also reduced interference due to different frequency bands, smoother image transmission with H.265 encoding and better signal performance compared to the previous version of OcuSync.

How the Mavic Air 2 Obstacle Sensing Works

The Mavic Air 2 can sense objects in 3 directions. It has a Forward, Backward Vision System.

For Downward sensing, the quadcopter has a Vision system and Infrared sensing system.

The Vision System is constantly scanning for obstacles in front and behind the Mavic Air 2, allowing it to avoid collisions by flying around the obstacle or hovering in front if there is no path around the obstacle.

Mavic Air 2 Sensors

The DJI Mavic Air 2 sensors for Forward, Backward and Downward obstacle detection are dual vision sensors on the nose, dual vision sensors on the back and dual vision sensors on the underside.

The Downward Vision System also has ToF sensors, along with the dual vision sensors, to assist the Mavic Air 2 maintain its current position and hover in place very precisely.

The Mavic Air 2 downward vision and infrared sensors allow the quadcopter to fly indoors very precisely or outdoors where GPS is unavailable.

Mavic Air 2 Side Sensors

There are no Mavic Air 2 side sensors as it only has forward, backward and downward sensing capabilities.

Calibrating The Mavic Air 2 Vision  System

If the Mavic Air 2 detects any abnormalities in the Vision sensing system, it will automatically perform a calibration.

Then, if the issue still exists after the automatic vision calibration, then a prompt will appear in the DJI Fly app to complete an advanced calibration.

DJI Mavic Air 2 APAS 3.0 System

The Mavic Air 2 has an Advanced Pilot Assistance System (APAS)

This APAS has been approved in the Mavic Air 2 and it is now called APAS 3.0, which is available in Normal mode.

With APAS 3.0, the quadcopter will avoid obstacles while you are flying by going above, below to the left or right of obstacles.

The Mavic Air 2 APAS 3.0 system generates a realtime map of the surroundings, producing the appropriate flight path to avoid obstacles automatically in flight.

To check to see if APAS is turned on, open the DJI Fly app, go into the System Settings, then Safety and you will find APAS in there.

Auxiliary Light 

Along with the Obstacle Sensing System, an auxiliary light has been added to improve vision and safety in poor lighting conditions.  The auxiliary light also helps the Mavic Air 2 to land safely.

Backward Sensing

Downward Sensing

Notes On Mavic Air 2 Obstacle Sensing

If you have a drone with obstacle detection and collision avoidance, it is really important to understand how it works and the conditions where it won’t work.

All drones will have similar modes or circumstances where the obstacle detection and collision avoidance won’t work and it is always good to read the user manual thoroughly to understand how the obstacle detection works and when it doesn’t work.

  • The downward obstacle sensing system cannot work properly over surfaces which are shiny, transparent, reflective or do not have clear pattern variations.
  •  If the light is fading or in darkness, then the vision sensors won’t work.
  • If the Mavic Air 2 is flying too fast, the drone will not have enough time to brake and stop.
  • Too Small of obstacles such as leaves or electrical wires are too small to be detected.
  • Moving Objects  such as people or surfaces.
  • Over surfaces with reflect or absorb  infrared waves.

Return To Home Safety Feature

DJI Mavic Air 2 Remote Controller features review

The Return to Home (RTH) function will bring the Mavic Air 2 back to the last recorded home point when the GPS signal is strong.

The are 3 types of Return to Home;

Smart RTH: This is initiated by the Pilot either by tapping ‘H’ in the DJI Fly app or by pressing down on the RTH button on the Remote Controller until you hear a beep.

Low Battery RTH: The return to home is triggered when the battery is depleted to a point, which may affect the safe return of the Mavic Air 2.

The Low Battery RTH can be cancelled by the pilot

Failsafe RTH: If the Home point was successfully recorded, the Failsafe RTH will be automatically activated if the signal from the remote controller is lost for more than 11 seconds.

Note: When you receive your new quadcopter, it is very important to read the Mavic Air 2 User Manual, especially the sections on the intelligent flight battery,  return to home features and safety instructions.  Read these sections a few times.

Flight Recorder

All the Mavic Air flight telemetry, status information and other information are automatically saved to the 8 GB internal data recorder on the quadcopter. This data can be access using the DJI Assistant 2 software.

Data would include GPS, battery, flight modes, Vision System status information plus a lot more.

The DJI Fly app prompts regarding flying in GEO zones. This can also be disabled in the settings.

DJI Air 2 Review Of Flight Modes

The Mavic Air 2 has 3 flight modes as follows;

N-Mode (Normal) – For regular flying and using intelligent flight modes. This is flying with dual GPS and GLONASS satellites. In N-Mode, the Mavic Air 2 utilizes both the GPS, Vision and Infrared systems to locate itself, stabilize and navigate very precisely.

S-Mode (Sport) – In Sport mode, the Mavic Air 2 uses GPS for positioning and the quadcopter can fly at it’s maximum speed. Also, in S-mode, the Mavic Air 2 drone and remote controller are optimized for agility and speed. The stick movements on the Mavic Air 2 RC will be far more responsive than in N-mode.

In Sports mode the Vision System is turned off so it can’t avoid obstacles automatically.

T-Mode (Tripod) – Use this Tripod mode which is based on the Normal mode for exceptional smooth flying, which is great when filming.

Mavic Air 2 Gimbal Flight Operation Modes

There are 2 gimbal operation modes available which give you a different flying experience.

Follow Mode: The gimbal compensates for aircraft Tilt and Pitch to keep video image steady and the horizon kept straight. Great for taking video.

FPV Mode: Camera is locked to the quadcopter’s orientation, so video image will tilt when the Mavic Air 2 rolls. Great for FPV flying.

The Mavic Air 2 drone uses ActiveTrack 3.0 to follow you while filming at the same time. The Mavic Air 2 follow you mode also detects and avoids obstacles while tracking.

There are 2 moves within the ActiveTrack 3.0 which are as follows;

Trace: The Mavic Air 2 tracks and follow you at a constant distance. This works in all 3 flight modes (Normal, Sport, Tripod)

Parallel: The Mavic Air 2 will follow you at a constant angle from the side. This works in all 3 flight modes.

ActiveTrack 3.0 will follow you when running, jumping, or cycling. It can follow people, bicycles, cars and boats etc.

Mavic Air 2 Quick Shots

With the Mavic Air 2, you have a choice of 6 QuickShots. These quick shots allow you to concentrate on capturing aerial film or photos with the Mavic Air 2 flying autonomously. The Mavic Air 2 quick shots are as follows;

  • Rocket: Ascend with the camera pointing downward.
  • Dronie: Fly backward and upward, with the camera locked on your subject.
  • Circle: The Mavic Air 2 circles around the subject.
  • Helix: Fly upward, spiraling around your subject.
  • Boomerang: The Mavic Air 2 flies backward around the subject in an oval path.
  • Asteroid: In Asteroid Quickshot, the Mavic Air 2 flies backward and upward. It takes several photos, then flies to it’s starting point.

Mavic Air 2 Spotlight Intelligent Flight Mode

Spotlight 2.0 intelligent flight mode allows the Mavic Air 2 camera to keep you or your subject in the center of the frame while you fly. You just select your subject and fly. It is so easy to set up and it is a terrific aerial filming mode.

Mavic 2 Points Of Interest (POI 3.0)

Point of Interest 3.0 uses advanced positioning technology to create an automated flight path and a fixed point, which the Mavic Air 2 will circle around, keeping the subject in the center of the frame.

POI 3.0 can track objects like people, cars, and boats, giving you terrific options for creative aerial filming.

All you need to do is select a static object as the Point of Interest.  Then, set the circle radius, flight altitude and speed. The Mavic Air 2 quadcopter will then fly around the subject using these settings.

Mavic Air 2 Hyperlapse (8K)

Mavic Air 2 supports Hyperlapse in 8k. Hyperlapse allows you to warp time and space for exceptional footage, without requiring post-processing. It is very easy to set up.

Choose from the following Hyperlapse modes, then select the shooting location and the DJI Fly app will do the rest.

Free

The Mavic Air 2 will automatically take photos and generate a time lapse video. Set the interval time, video duration and the maximum speed. The DJI Fly app will display the number of photos, which will be taken and how long the shooting time will be.

Circle & Course Lock

With Course Lock, there are 2 ways to use it.  The 1st way, the orientation of the Mavic Air 2 is fixed without being able to select a subject. In the 2nd way, the drone is fixed and it flies around the select object.

Waypoint modes:

The Mavic Air 2 automatically takes photos on a flight path from 2 up to 5 waypoints. It then generates a time lapse video.
